You love music. You play an instrument (or dream of playing one). You spend hours listening, practicing, and perhaps even writing your own melodies. But have you ever felt like there’s a missing piece? Like you’re hitting notes, but not truly speaking the language?

You’re not alone. Many aspiring musicians, from guitarists shredding solos to vocalists belting out tunes, find themselves playing by ear or rote memorization. While that’s a fantastic start, there’s a vast, rich world beneath the surface of every song – a world governed by music theory.

And before you picture dusty textbooks and complex equations, let’s stop right there. Music theory isn’t about stifling your creativity; it’s about empowering it.

The Myth vs. The Reality: What Music Theory Isn’t

Myth 1: “Music theory will make me sound robotic.” Reality: Quite the opposite! Understanding theory gives you the tools to break rules intentionally, to create unique tensions, and to craft more compelling melodies and harmonies. It’s like learning grammar before writing a poem – it gives you the framework to truly express yourself.

Myth 2: “It’s only for classical musicians or composers.” Reality: From pop to rock, jazz to EDM, every genre is built on theoretical principles. Knowing why certain chords sound good together, how a melody evokes a specific emotion, or why a bassline grooves the way it does will profoundly impact your playing and writing, no matter your style.

Myth 3: “It’s too hard and boring.” Reality: Like learning an instrument, it takes dedication, but with the right approach, music theory can be incredibly engaging and immediately applicable. Think of it as learning the secret language of your favorite songs.

The True Power: What Music Theory Is (And Why You Need It)

Imagine these scenarios:

You’re trying to write a song: Instead of aimlessly searching for chords, you’ll understand why a certain progression creates a feeling of joy, sadness, or anticipation. You’ll know how to build a chorus that lifts and a bridge that provides contrast.

You’re improvising: You won’t just be playing scales; you’ll be navigating chord changes with confidence, hitting “target” notes that make your solos sing, and expressing emotions through your melodic choices.

You’re learning a new song: You’ll pick up on patterns and structures faster, understanding the underlying harmony instead of just memorizing finger placements. This drastically speeds up your learning process.

You’re communicating with other musicians: When a bandleader says, “Play a ii-V-I in G,” you won’t stare blankly. You’ll instantly know what to do, making collaboration seamless and enjoyable.

You want to understand why music moves you: Theory provides the vocabulary to articulate the magic behind your favorite tracks. You’ll appreciate music on a deeper, more intellectual, and emotional level.

Are you a music enthusiast who loves to explore new sounds and experiment with different chord progressions? Then you’ve probably heard of chromatic mediant modulation – a music theory trick that has been used by some of the greatest composers of all time. In this article and video, we’ll explore what chromatic mediant modulation is, why it’s so magical, and how you can use it in your own music.

Today we look at a super useful music theory trick, and importantly why every great composer make use of this music theory trick! Film composers, like Howard Shore make good use of this music theory trick in the Lord of the rings and the rings of power sound tracks. Almost in every theme. So I highly recommend you learn this technique of you want some quick inspiration for your next song, game score or film score!

What is Chromatic Mediant Modulation?

Chromatic mediant modulation is a harmonic technique where a chord progression changes from one key to another that is a chromatic mediant away. What does that mean? It means that the new key is three half-steps up or down from the original key. For example, if you’re in the key of C major, the chromatic mediant keys would be E-flat major or A-flat major.

The Magic of Chromatic Mediant Modulation

So, why do composers love chromatic mediant modulation? Because it creates a sense of surprise and tension that can be incredibly powerful in music. It’s like taking a sudden turn down an unexpected path. The listener is taken on a journey that is both exciting and satisfying.

Chromatic mediant modulation can be used to transition between different sections of a song or to add an emotional impact to a specific moment. It can also be used to create a sense of resolution or to create a feeling of unease. The possibilities are endless.

Famous Examples of Chromatic Mediant Modulation

Many famous composers have used chromatic mediant modulation in their music. For example, in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, the transition from the third to the fourth movement uses chromatic mediant modulation. In Chopin’s Prelude No. 17 in A-flat major, the modulation from A-flat major to F-sharp major is a chromatic mediant modulation. And in the Beatles’ “Something,” the modulation from C major to A-flat major in the chorus is a chromatic mediant modulation.

Try It Yourself: How to Use Chromatic Mediant Modulation in Your Own Music

Now that you know what chromatic mediant modulation is and why it’s so magical, it’s time to try it out for yourself. Here are some tips on how to use chromatic mediant modulation in your own music:

Identify the key of your song and find the chromatic mediant keys.

Choose a moment in your song where you want to create a sense of surprise or tension.

Use chromatic mediant modulation to transition to a new key.

Experiment with different chord progressions in the new key to create the desired emotional impact.

In conclusion, chromatic mediant modulation is a powerful music theory trick that has been used by some of the greatest composers of all time. It can add a sense of surprise, tension, resolution, or unease to your music. So go ahead, give it a try, and see where the magic takes you!

Pirate music, also known as sea shanties, are a traditional form of maritime folk song that were sung by sailors and pirates during the golden age of piracy in the 18th and 19th centuries. These songs were used to pass the time and improve morale during long voyages, and often featured lyrics about life at sea, adventure, and maritime folklore. If you’re interested in composing pirate music, there are a few key elements that you’ll want to consider in order to capture the feel and spirit of this genre.

Chord Progressions: The Heart of Pirate Music

One of the most distinctive features of pirate music is its use of simple, repetitive chord progressions. These progressions often consist of just a few chords that are repeated over and over again, with the lyrics fitting into the chord changes. In this section, we’ll look at some chord progressions that are well-suited to pirate music.

I-IV-V: The Classic Rock and Roll Progression

The I-IV-V chord progression is a classic rock and roll progression that works well for pirate music. The I, IV, and V chords are the tonic, subdominant, and dominant chords of a particular key, and can give your music a sense of forward momentum and energy. For example, in the key of C, the I, IV, and V chords would be C, F, and G.

I-vi-IV-V: Adding Some Variety

This chord progression adds a bit of variety to the I-IV-V progression by including the vi chord (the minor sixth) as well. This can give your music a slightly more adventurous or exotic feel. In the key of C, the chords would be C, Am, F, and G.

I-IV-vi-V: A More Upbeat Feel

This chord progression is similar to the I-vi-IV-V progression, but replaces the minor vi chord with a major vi chord (the major sixth). This can give your music a more upbeat or celebratory feel. In the key of C, the chords would be C, F, A, and G.

Scales: Choosing the Right Key for Your Pirate Music

In addition to selecting the right chord progressions, it’s important to choose a key that is well-suited to your pirate music composition. In order to choose the right scales for your pirate music compositions, it’s important to consider the mood and emotion that you want to convey. Here are a few scales that are well-suited to pirate music, along with some information on the characteristics and uses of each scale:

Major: Major keys are generally upbeat and positive, making them well-suited to pirate music with a celebratory or adventurous feel. Major scales have a bright, cheerful sound, and are often used in music that is meant to inspire or uplift. In the key of C, for example, the notes of the C major scale would be C, D, E, F, G, A, and B.

Mixolydian: The Mixolydian mode is a major scale with a lowered seventh scale degree. This gives it a bluesy, slightly dissonant sound that can add an element of danger or mystery to your pirate music. The Mixolydian mode is often used in music with a folk or bluesy feel, and can add a sense of rough-and-tumble energy to your compositions. In the key of C, the notes of the C Mixolydian mode would be C, D, E, F, G, A, and Bb.

Dorian: The Dorian mode is a minor scale with a raised sixth scale degree. This gives it a slightly exotic, adventurous sound that can work well for pirate music. The Dorian mode is often used in music with a medieval or Renaissance feel, and can add a touch of mystery or intrigue to your compositions. In the key of C, the notes of the C Dorian mode would be C, D, Eb, F, G, A, and Bb.

Ultimately, the choice of scale will depend on the specific needs of your composition. You may find that certain scales work better for certain moods or emotions, or that certain scales fit better with certain chord progressions or melodies. Experimentation is key, so don’t be afraid to try out different scales and see what works best for your music.

Is this what a typical pirate mandolin looked like?

Instruments: Adding Color and Character to Your Pirate Music

There are a wide range of instruments that you can use in your pirate music compositions, ranging from traditional maritime instruments like the accordion and fiddle to more modern instruments like electric guitar and synthesizers. Here are a few instrument suggestions to consider:

Accordion: The accordion is a popular instrument in pirate music due to its ability to play melodies and chords at the same time, as well as its portability. It can add a lively, festive feel to your music.

Fiddle: The fiddle, also known as a violin, is another popular instrument in pirate music. It can add a lively, energetic feel to your compositions, and can be used to play both melodies and chordal accompaniment.

Mandolin: The mandolin is a plucked string instrument with a bright, ringing sound that can add a touch of whimsy to your pirate music. It is often used for melodies, but can also be used for chordal accompaniment.

Electric guitar: The electric guitar can add a modern twist to your pirate music, and can be used to play both melodies and chords. You can use a variety of effects pedals, such as reverb and distortion, to give your guitar a more “piratey” sound.

Synthesizers: Synthesizers can be used to create a wide range of sounds, including sea shanty-inspired instrumentation like accordions and fiddles. You can also use synthesizers to create more modern, electronic-sounding elements in your compositions.

Percussion: Percussion instruments like drums, shakers, and tambourines can add energy and drive to your pirate music. You can also use percussion to create a sense of movement and momentum, such as by building a groove or using a call-and-response pattern.

Traditional maritime instruments: Other traditional maritime instruments that you might consider using in your pirate music include the banjo, harmonica, and tin whistle. These instruments can add a sense of authenticity and historical context to your compositions.

Arranging Your Pirate Music: Tips and Techniques

Once you’ve chosen your chords, scales, and instruments, it’s time to start arranging your pirate music. Here are a few tips and techniques to consider:

Keep it simple: Pirate music is generally characterized by its simplicity and repetition. Don’t be afraid to use the same chord progression or melody over and over again, and keep your arrangements straightforward and easy to follow.

Use call-and-response: A common technique in pirate music is the use of call-and-response patterns, where one group of singers or instruments sings or plays a line, and another group responds. This can create a sense of interaction and camaraderie within your music.

Build the intensity: You can create a sense of forward momentum and energy in your pirate music by gradually building the intensity over the course of the song. You can do this by adding more instruments or layering different parts, or by increasing the tempo or dynamic range.

Experiment with instrumentation: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your instrumentation and try out different combinations of instruments. You might find that certain instruments work well together, or that certain instruments help to bring out different moods or emotions in your music.

Conclusion:

Composing pirate music can be a fun and rewarding challenge, and by following the tips and techniques outlined above, you’ll be well on your way to creating your own sea shanties. Whether you’re a seasoned composer or just starting out, there’s always room for creativity and experimentation in the world of pirate music.
Welcome to the rings of power music analysis. This is a complete breakdown and music analysis of the Rings Of Power opening theme from the Amazon Prime series.
I made a video on how to play the Rings Of Power theme song so you can play it too!

The opening theme to the Rings of Power is a grandiose and powerful cue highlighting the light… and the darkness of the world of Tolkien. While the Rings of Power’s first motif (out of the larger theme) begins with a major tonality, it later returns in minor. Believe me, this is excellent song writing and tribute to the original Lord of the rings themes. Simple but effective and strong themes!

The Rings Of Power opening theme song

On friday 2022-09-02 the first two episodes of The Rings Of Power was released on Amazon Prime and the opening theme instantly gave me goozebumps. I can’t wait to hear more themes composed by Howard Shore and Bear McCreary (God of War etc.).

Enjoy my rendition of “How to play the rings of power opening theme on the piano”.

Learn the Rings of Power Theme song on piano

Diatonic Mediants in the Rings Of Power theme

The main themes harmony makes use of diatonic mediants which was used extensively in the original Lord of the rings soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. In The Rings Of Power theme songs first two chords we have a C Major to E minor. The tonic-chord to the third-chord.

In the second motif we find an F Major to A minor chord, again diatonic mediants.

We will discuss the theme song harmony, melody and arrangement in more detailed in the next Film Scoring for beginners video.

Until then make sure to watch this Rings Of Power clip and get to know the theme.

Learn music theory in 10 min

The first thing you need to know as a beginner in your music studies is the major and minor scales.
More importantly the major and “natural” minor scale!

How do you know what notes to play in a major scale?

First pick a root key. Your tonic. This is your grounding note. Then you use the music theory “step system” to count the notes of the scale.

Whole Steps and Half Steps: The Basics of Musical Scales

The basic building blocks of chromatic and diatonic scales are half steps and whole steps, the two smallest intervals between notes in Western music.

In the language of music theory, a step is the distance between notes of different pitches. A half step, or semitone, is the smallest interval between notes in Western music. Notes that are directly next to each other—such as E and F, or A sharp and B—are a half step apart. Two half steps equal one whole step. The notes G and A are one whole step apart, as are the notes B flat and C.

What Are Whole Steps?

A whole step is the distance between two notes that have one note in between them. In other words, a whole step is equal to two half steps or two semitones. If you play the note C on the piano, the note D is one whole step above it, and B flat is one whole step below it.

Any scale that proceeds in whole step intervals is a whole tone scale. This type of scale sounds unstable and almost ethereal. If you have ever heard an old film score evoke the sound of “dreams” or “time travel” you may be familiar with the sound of the whole tone scale.

Half Step and Whole Step Pattern in Major Scales

The building block of Western music is the major scale, which consists of seven notes. Starting from the lowest note—the root of the scale—and going up, all major scales progress in the following pattern, regardless of key signature: root, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step (back to the root an octave higher).

Steps in the MAJOR Scale

W-W-H-W-W-W-H

Steps in the MINOR Scale

W-H-W-W-H-W-W

Becoming a professional piano player and fluent on the keyboard takes time and effort. Yes, there is no quick solution or short cut! But with these 5 tips to improve your piano playing article and video I want to show the concepts I use to make the piano performance sound more intricate and alive!

5 tips to improve your piano playing

Here are a few different concepts you should practise to become a better piano player:

Arpeggio – Break up the notes of the chords in the progression. Play them in arpeggios with your right hand, and play the bass (in octaves) in your left hand.

Timing variations / flairs – Don’t just settle for straight notes…like quarter, 8th, 16th notes. Add some trioles or more fluid rhythms. Spice the performance with some musical flairs and make the part come alive.

Inversions & octaves – Play the broken chord arpeggio in different inversions and walk through different octaves.

Arpeggios with both hands – Play the chord arpeggio with both hands. Start from left and walk up to the right hand (and maybe back)…or why not start high and walk down. Anything goes, as long as you play with passion! I know this is a bit hard to master, and get the notes fluid and tight… but it’s super rewarding so make sure to practise this key concept.

Ostinato – Select three notes that can play through all the chords in the progression. Play these notes in a repeating figure with your right hand while you walk through the chord progression with your left hand. Try to swap them out too.

Where to go from here on the piano?

These are just a few concepts you could practise. As you can see/hear in the video I often pick a few of these concepts and randomly switch between them as I perform on the piano. My tip is that you start practising these concepts one by one to get a good feel for their flow and sound. Then try swapping between them as you play through your favourite chord progressions.

Great finger excercise for the piano player – How to build finger strength

You should always strive to improve your finger strength and constantly challenge yourself with new rhythms and chord voicings. With time this will really pay off in your piano playing and piano improvisation.

If you want to improve finger strength and at the same time accuracy, a simple excercise is to place one of your hands firmly in front of you on a table. Let your hand be slightly curved like if you were going to play on the piano keybed.

Begin with your thumb, lift one finger at the time and place it down with a “thump” like if you were playing a key. Try to play with the same pressure on all fingers when they go down.

In the beginning your thumb, index and middle finger is probably going to be the strongest. But with this excercise (and some practise) even your ring- and pinky finger will get stronger.

The great thing about this excercise is that you can practise this fake “playing” wherever you are. Practise on the job, in the couch, on the bus, in the car. Yes, I used to practise this on the stearing wheel when I was driving to/from music school.

I hope this video and article on how to improve on the piano was helpful!

In todays episode you will learn how to build tension in music!

What is music without tension and release?

Not much!

That’s why I made this new video on how to build tension and anticipation in music.
Music is much more exciting if it’s going somewhere!

This trick you will learn is used all over the place…and in all kinds of genres. But not everyone knows how to use this trick to it’s full potential!

Learn how to build tension in your music in the video!

Pedal point

Today we will talk about pedal point, or pedal note, and how you can use this really easy (yet powerful) trick to achieve excitement, suspense and anticipation in your songs.

What is pedal point

Pedal point is when you play a note repeatedly or sustained throughout a section of a song. Sometimes the pedal point is used thoughout a whole music piece. Around (above / below) that pedal point you can have different chords happening, but you keep that pedal note running.

The pedal point creates the effect of anticipation and adds a driving force to your music.

The pedal note yearns to resolve!

Pedal point and ostinatos are VERY common composition tricks used in game music and film scores.

What is the most common pedal point?

The most common pedal point to use is the fifth in your scale. The fifth is dominant and has a really driving force to resolve to the tonic (root note). That’s why it works so great!

If you’re in the Fminor scale. Your pedal point would be a repeating (or sustained) C note.

Another common pedal note is the root note, which gives a different feel. You can also play the fifth and the root note (at the same time / rhythm) to create the pedal point effect.

You can obviously use other notes as pedal point too, but the fifth and root are the most common ones.

Tips for creating cinematic chords like Hans Zimmer

Here are a few tips for creating cinematic chords like Hans Zimmer:

Use a wide range of chord types and inversions. Zimmer is known for his use of dissonant and unresolved chords, as well as his use of unconventional chord progressions.

Experiment with layering different chord structures and voicings. Zimmer often uses multiple keyboard sounds stacked on top of each other to create a rich, full sound.

Use orchestration to add depth and texture to your chords. Zimmer often incorporates a range of orchestral instruments into his chord structures, including strings, brass, and woodwinds.

Consider the emotional impact of your chord choices. Zimmer’s music is known for its ability to evoke strong emotions, and the chords he uses play a big role in this.

Don’t be afraid to break the rules. Zimmer is known for his experimental approach to composition, and he isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of traditional harmony.

    });
  }
})();
/*]]>*/

How does chord inversions work?

Hans Zimmer often uses chord inversions to add interest and complexity to his chord progressions. Inverting a chord means rearranging the order of the notes in the chord so that a different note is in the bass. For example, a C major chord in root position (C-E-G) can be inverted by moving the C to the top of the chord, resulting in a first inversion chord (E-G-C).

Using inversions can give a chord progression a more voice-led or melodic feel, rather than just being a series of block chords. It can also create dissonance or tension by disrupting the expected harmonic movement. Zimmer often uses dissonant and unresolved chords in his music, and inverting the chords can be a useful way to create these effects.

Quick analysis of Hans Zimmer song TIME from the Inception movie soundtrack

Hans Zimmer – Time

“Time” is an instrumental track that features a repetitive, driving piano motif, accompanied by a soaring string section and pulsing electronic beats. The melody of the song is relatively simple, but the harmonization and chord progression are more complex. Zimmer often uses unconventional chord progressions and dissonant chords in his music, and this is definitely the case in “Time” as well.

The song also features a sense of forward momentum and a building intensity, which is often present in Zimmer’s music. This could be achieved through a variety of techniques, such as layering additional instruments or sounds over the course of the song, or increasing the tempo or dynamic range. Zimmer loves epic percussion and building songs from smaller rhythmic parts to larger intense sections.

A more advanced analysis of the song “Time” from Inception

“Time” has two sets with four harmonies each. The first is a set of four: iv, i, III (an argument can be made for IV/VII), VII. The second set is iv, VI, III, VII, a harmonic variation on the first.

The harmonic plan starts with a plagal sound going from iv to i, but ends up VII which acts as IV/iv, which is quite clever. By establishing a plagal sound in the ear, the harmonic progression doesn’t ever seem like it should end. Importantly, this is important both in that it helps your ear forgive that you’re hearing the same thing over and over again.

We could also percieve that this is depicting / reflecting the dream levels (Inception‘s score is full of fun little things like that).

Progressive layering during the course of a song

Every time the set of eight harmonies repeats, the orchestration grows. More instruments come in, the sound becomes broader, louder, and busier. This is really common in music, I guess we could call it “progressive layering” as it’s about adding layers as the song progresses.
